8th Dec

The Longford pub was closed in 2009 and the upper floors sold to a developer for conversion to flats. Faucet Inns have finally refurbished the ground floor which reopened under a new name The Refectory on 6th Dec 2013. The pub is now biased towards food, which is served all day including breakfast evening supper. Craft beers available. The cask beers being served were: Portobello Pale, Westerham 1965 Special Bitter & God's Wallop Christmas Ale. Further information not known until pub surveyed.

The Bull's Head in Barnes is expected to reopen 12/13th Dec this year. See their web site for more information.

Vince Cable MP-visits Twickenham BreweryVince Cable - the MP for Twickenham and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, visited Twickenham Fine Ales today. He was giving recognition to a growing local business in his constituency as part of Small Business Saturday.

It's been reported (via WhatPub) that the Sawyers Arms at 25 Ashford Road, Feltham, TW13 4QR, has been closed and all Fuller's signage removed.

Hannah Johnson of the The Moon Under Water (JD Wetherspoon) at 84-86 Staines Road, Hounslow, would like to offer all CAMRA members a 20% discount on food when they produce their Camra membership card.

4th Nov

The Hope at 115-117 Kew Road, Richmond, has re-opened with a temporary holding manager.

Moon Under Water in Hounslow, is hosting A 'Meet the Brewer' event on Wednesday this week (6th Nov), at 7.0pm, with the Binghams brewer attending. Their Space Hoppy IPA has recently also appeared at the Old Anchor, Twickenham, and Noble Green Wines in Hampton Hill regularly stock their beers in cask and bottle.

3rd Nov

The new Brewery BarTwickenham Fine Ales opened their Brewery Bar for the first time on Saturday 2nd Nov for the Autumn Rugby Internationals. It will be open between 11am - 2pm, selling cask beer at £3 a pint. Their bottled Naked Ladies and branded T & Polo shirts and fleeces were also available to buy. Hot food was provided by a dedicated food stall.

The brewery bar will be open at the same times on the 9th & 16th Nov, In the longer term they intend to open Thursday, Friday and Saturday till 6pm.


The White Cross in Richmond are holding their Annual Winter Warmer Breakfast on Friday 8th November. To reserve your ticket call the pub on (020) 8940 6844. For the cost of the ticket you get 2 pints of Winter Warmer Ale, a full English breakfast and a live jazz band. The Young's dray horses will also be there. The pub opens at 9am.

20th Oct

Two london brew pubs have been aquired by M&Bs Castle Pubs Division.

  1. The Botanist Brewery & Kitchen, Kew Green
  2. The Lamb Brewery in Chiswick

An email today from Simon Gueneau, the Botanist brewer, advising that the new owners intend to close the Botanist's brewery.

After a major refurbishment by Young & Co, the White Hart in Barnes has reopened and taken on the BBC Masterchef finalist Tom Whitaker, who has created new menus.

10th Oct

The Foresters, in Hampton Wick High Street, reopens on Friday 18th after a major refurbishment. Three cask ales available. See their web site - www.the-foresters.com

27th Sept

The Tap on the Line at Kew Gardens Station re-opened 27th September. There are 6 hand pulls serving a range of Fuller's cask beers and five craft beers on tap, plus 25 bottled beers from all around the world.

The Hope at 115-117 Kew Rd, Richmond is to closed om Monday 30th Sept. Enterprise Inns has put the lease up for sale. The pub may re-open with a temporary holding manager.

20th Sept

The Castelnau at 201A Castelnau, Barnes. SW13 9ER.
A request for Change of Use from Class A4 to a nursery (Class D1) with minor alterations has been submitted to Richmond Council on the 4th Sept. Application ref. 13/3185/FUL Permission granted: 30/01/2014.

Built in 1842 and originally called The Boileau Hotel, it has undergone several transformations and changes of name in recent years. It closed as a pub and restaurant in 2008 when the Massive Pub Company went into administration. The building has since been vacant and is now in a state of disrepair and slow decay. The site is located within the Castlenau Conservation Area.

17th Sept

Pub being refurbishedThe Railway at Kew Gardens Station is currently closed and undergoing a major refurbishment. The pub's new name is to be called The Tap on the Line. The pub was acquired by Fuller's in 2012. The pub should be re-open on the 27th Sept 2013.

Young's have closed the Ye White Hart at Barnes, for refurbishment/ redecoration 9th Sept. The pub is expected to be re-opened early October.

14th Sept

The White Cross (Richmond) annual Winter Warmer breakfast will be held on Friday 9th November this year. It starts from 9am for breakfast. Joining the event will be the Youngs' Shire Dray horses, accompanied by some live Jazz. Tickets available from 1st October at £12 each.

12th Sept

Following on from their Summer Ale, Wild River and Sticket Wicket, Fuller's will be rolling out a new beer later this month called Traitors Gate. This is discribed as a red ale made with Australian hops and malted rye.

A new Tenant has taken on the Castle in Isleworth. This is a large traditional Young's landmark pub that has been run down over the years. Currently only serving Young's Bitter but they hope to add Bombardier in the near future. Food is now available including a good value Sunday lunch.

The Loft NightClub situated directly above The London Road Bar in Twickenham, has been replaced by a new restaurant (opened 9th Sept) called the Riverside Kitchen. The pub below is to be rebranded The Crooked Hooker (!)in the new year.

10th Sept

WhatPub.com is CAMRA's new national online pub guide. It was launched to CAMRA members last September and will be open to the public on September 23rd 2013. Look out for promotional posters and beer mats appearing in your local pubs, and please tell your family and friends about WhatPub.

WhatPub provides details of over 35,800 pubs serving real ale, making it the definitive online pub guide for the real ale drinker. In addition, the site provides full details for over 21,000 of those pubs, with details of real ales available, opening times, and description of the pub. It should be noted that WhatPub is now optimised for mobile browsers.

What was the The Rose & Crown at 79 Kew Green has now been refurbished and reopened (9th Sept) as The Cricketers. Looking at a picture on their Facebook page there are 4 handpumps serving Taylor's Landloard, Sambrook's Wandle, London Pride and Thwaites Wainwright.

6th Sept

The Foresters, in Hampton Wick High Street, will shut for a £250k refurbishment after a closing party on Saturday, 14th September. The work is expected to take five weeks to complete. Pub to reopen 18th Oct.

The Misty Moon at 53-57 London Road, Twickenham, is displaying a large banner declaring that it's under new management. Only Courage Best and London Pride available.

The Revolution bar by Richmond Riverside has been banned from selling alcohol this weekend, Sept 6th to 8th, after continuing problems with antisocial behaviour. As a consequence of these serious incidents, the late night venue has its operating hours reduced when it re-opens on Monday. The venue will now shut at 11.30pm instead of 1am.

4th Sept

A re branding exercise by Twickenham Fine Ales has started by changing the design of all its pump-clips. These will be rolled out to publicans as the clips become available. The Wishing Well in Hounslow has been renamed Tommy Flynn's.

All Bar One in Richmond has closed for a refurbishment.

22nd Aug

Pump clip imageThe Twickenham Fine Ales brewery have announced two new beers. Autumn Red (4.4%) to replace Autumn Blaze, and Yakima Valley ABA 4.8% [A citra hopped Amercan Brown Ale]. Tasting notes for these beers not yet available.

Production of bottled beers has also started, the main initial outlets are expected to be RealAle.com and Noble Green Wines. The following bottled beers will shortly be available:

Daisy Cutter - Bottle Conditioned

Old Bruin*

*These 3 beers will be between 8.5 and 9.1% abv.

Noble Green Wine have announced (27th Aug) that bottled Daisy Cutter is now on sale.

9th Aug

The North Star at 69 Whitton Road. Hounslow, is currently closed and being refurbished. It's to reopen soon as Platform 3 - Bar & Shisha lounge.

30th July

The owners of Convivial pubs is reported to be selling six of its London pubs. For our branch this means the Botanist Brewery & Kitchen at Kew Green. It's offered as Freehold with offers in excess of £2.5m. Source: Publican's Morning Advertiser.

25th July

Royal Oak, TwickenhamThe leasehold & contents of the Royal Oak at 13 Richmond Road, Twickenham, is being advertised by Fleurets Ltd. Ref L318735 (pdf)

Features: Large ground floor open plan trade area, Function room to first floor, Theatre style trade kitchen. Price £100,000.

23rd July

Hounslow Council has received a planning application to convert the Kings Arms (that's been closed for years) at 33 South Street, Isleworth into a Co-Op supermarket as opposed to Sainsbury's as applied for in 2011. See P/2013/2527 (click check-box, and follow link again)

19th July

The Whistle Stop (Ye Olde Toy) pub/bar, located right beside the Hampton Court gates to Bushy Park, Hampton Cout Road, has been sold after being closed for many years (7?). The following has been found on Stefan Zins associates Ltd website:

"New Neighbours for the Palace: After 5 years, three planning applications and two planning appeals Full Planning Permission for the Whistle Stop (Ye Olde Toy) at the Lion Gate entrance to Hampton Court Palace has been granted. The project will create a 5 bedroom house over a basement and three upper floors alongside which will be built four luxury apartments. All dwellings will enjoy spectacular views over Grade 1 Bushy Park to the north and the palace grounds to the south. Completion 2014."

12th July

The Cardinal Wolsey, The Green, Hampton Court Rd, East Molesey that closed in Aug 2011, has reopened after a major refurbishment on the 2nd July 2013 as the All Seasons grill on the swinging pub sign. The pub is being merged with the Hotel next door. The name of the hotel (also getting refurbished) has yet to be defined. Head Chef is Andrei Lesment of TV and the Michelin Guide fame.

The Prince Blücher at 124 The Green Twickenham, has submitted a planning application (13/2243/FUL) for a two storey side extension with glazed lean to roof. Erection of a new timber pergola and a new section of glazed roof to existing pergola. Application decision date: 19th Aug 2013.

8th July

After 2 years of closure, the pub previously known as the Rugby Inn (but never opened), Grand Union, Black Dog, Twickers, Hobgoblin, Filthy MacNasty's; at 11 London Road, Twickenham has reopened on the 6th July as the Twickenham Tavern. The new Tenants are Alan & Claire Ricketts who previously ran the Three Kings in 52 Heath Rd. Four cask beers available but these likely to change: Deuchars IPA ABV 3.8% (370p/pt), Golden XPA ABV 4.3%, Courage Best Bitter 4% ABV, Theakston's Old Peculier 5.6% ABV (410p/pt).

4th July

Tom Madeiros the Head Brewer of Twickenham Fine Ales, whose beers have won several awards and put our local Brewery on the map, is leaving the brewery this week. Tom is taking time out to travel, and also do some brewing in Spain and Belgium. His replacement is Stuart Medcalf from WJ King. A new assistant brewer from the fff brewery will also be joining Twickenham Fine Ales in August.

Young's Pub Co will be soon offering in their pubs a Young's branded summer ale infused with passion fruit, called Hummingbird, at 4.2% ABV. Fuller's have a new pale hoppy Summer ale called Sticky Wicket at 4.7% ABV.

3rd July

Pete Brew behind the barPete Brew who has helped transform the Sussex Arms into a success over the last two years, is to leave the pub at the end of the week to travel around the USA for a few months. The new manager's name is Andy Barlow who starts on the 8th July. There will be a number of staff changes but the beer, cider and food should continue along with live music, and vinyl records on the turntable.

The Sussex Arms was voted Richmond & Hounslow Branch Pub of the Year 2012 as well as Greater London Cider Pub of the Year 2012. I'm sure everyone who has enjoyed their visits to the pub will wish them well for the future.

Geronimo Inns has taken over the leasehold of The Bulls Head (and famous music room) in Barnes on July 1st 2013. The pub is to close for 3 to 4 months while it undergoes a complete refurbishment. Geronimo Inns, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Young & Co.'s Brewery, and is run as an autonomous business from Young's head office in Wandsworth.

2nd July

Old Anchor at 71 Richmond Rd, Twickenham. TW1 3AW. Planning application: 13/1394/FUL received by Richmond Council 25th April 2013. Proposal - Erection of a ground floor single storey extension to the rear garden area and a ground floor extension to the side of the pub to create new entrance.

21st June

Outside view of pubAfter extensive modernisation and refurbishment to create a pub, dining room & two cosy private dining rooms; the Railway at 3 Victoria Road, Teddington is to open their doors from 5pm on Friday 21st June. Three regularly changing cask beers available, currently: Wells Bombardier, Sambrook's Wandle and Sharp's Doom Bar.

The Old Anchor (ex Young's and now a FREE House) at 71 Richmond Rd, Twickenham, is to hold a Live Music & Beer event on Saturday 6th July (8pm). 10 different ales and ciders, with music from the Mighty Handful band.

The Three Kings at 52 Heath Rd, Twickenham, is reported to be under new management/tenant.

7th June

Load of Hay, 330 Staines Road, Bedfont. AG&G are advertising the freehold of this pub for sale with vacant possession with a guide price £600k. Potential for alternative use/redevelopment (subject to necessary consents).

18th May

The Crown at 174 Richmond Road, Twickenham, reopened on Tuesday 14th May after an extensive refurbishment. Serving 4 real ales: Harvey's Best Bitter, Sharp's Cornish Coaster, Sambrook's Wandle and Surry Hill's Shere Drop (350p/pt).

13th May

What was the Bloated Mallard TW11 at 3 Victoria Rd, Teddington (next to Rail Station), has been taken over by the Handmade Pubs group and will reopen as The Railway mid June. It is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to create a pub, dining room & two cosy private dining rooms. To find out more email: railway@handmadepubs.com

The Railway Tavern, 11 Sheen Lane, Mortlake SW14 has been repainted light grey and now looks to be occupied as a dwelling. Lower windows covered-up internally in matching gray. Painted pub sign replaced by a metal one depicting a train. Side door and a new side wall and railings added.

1st May

The Crown at 174 Richmond Road, Twickenham is currently being refurbished and the garden has been paved. It's expected to reopen in May.

The Rugby Inn at 11 London Rd, Twickenham has been (temporarily) closed for some time but looks to be receiving some refurbishment as the outside has been repainted.

Dermot McCann the long standing tenant of the Adelaide at 57 Park Rd Teddington has retired. The new tenant from 16th April is Mariana Carciun.

25th April

La Cloche at The Lion in Wick Rd, Teddington have replaced Fuller's London Pride with Hogs Back T.E.A. Other real ales are Sharp's Doom Bar and Twickenham Naked Ladies.

21st April

The Bloated Mallard TW11 at 3 Victoria Rd, Teddington closed earlier than expected on the 20th April. The pub is now only open to sell off all its fixtures and fitting (11am-4pm till 23rd) before the new tenant takes over. The tenant Paul Roomussaar has now taken on The Royal Oak at 24 Watford Heath, Watford, Herts. The new owners of the BMTW11 (name expected to change) will be undertaking a major refurbishment of the premises before reopening.

19th April

It's been reported that the demolition of the Charlie Butler at 40 Mortlake High St, is now well under way.

12th Apr

The Windmill at 45 Bell Rd Hounslow. A notice on the window states 'Closed until further notice'. Update 17th April: AG&G are advertising this pub 'for sale or to let' (Ref:LONF378). The property is to be sold freehold with vacant possession on an unconditional basis.

South Western Hotel, 156/158 Whitton Rd. Hounslow
Hounslow Council have approved (17th Jan 2013) plans for the erection at 156 Whitton Rd (pub garden), a three storey building with roof accommodation to provide four one-bedroom and three two-bedroom flats with seven associated parking spaces. See System Ref: P/2012/3377, Planning Ref: 01205/G/P3.

158 Whitton Rd (the pub). Approval granted (20th Dec 2012) for conversion of the upper floors of the property to six flats, rear extension with garden terrace, parking space for persons with disabilities and cycle store. See System Ref: P/2012/2747, Planning Ref: 01205/G/P1(4)

Blue Ginger Bar (pka South Western Hotel), Certificate of lawfulness for the change of use from A4 (Public House) to A3 (Restaurant) granted 21st Jun 2010.

21st Mar

On the 20th March 2013 Youngs have finally sold the Old Anchor in Twickenham to an investment company. The new owners have given the Landlord (Barry Reilly) a 6 month 'Tenancy at Will' whilst they explore options, so the pub is now a FREEHOUSE, and will be able to source their beers directly from independent breweries. Barry is very much looking forward to getting some better beers in.

15th Mar

AG&G are currently advertising The Albany Arms at 17 Albany Rd, Brentford on a 'To Let' free of tie basis. Guide rent of £25k per year.

8th Mar

The George & Dragon at 29 London Road, Brentford, has been demolished end of Feb.

Outside view of the George & Dragon, BrentfordThis pub existed in 1828 and was referred to as the Green Dragon in 1899. The pub closed down in 2009 and then reopened. It closed again and was subsequently boarded-up and the Freehold offered for sale in May 2012. It was a three storey building with Charrington & Co Ltd branding outside with two Charrington six-sided lanterns and an oval Charrington plaque.

PotY presentation: Ian White, Ash Zobel and Peter BrewThe Sussex Arms was voted Greater London Cider Pub of the Year 2012. A presentation certificate was presented by Ian White (Regional Cider Co-ordinator) to Peter Brew and Ash Zobel on the 28th Feb.

24th Feb

The building previously known as the Queen Dowager in Teddington has been fenced off in preparation for its demolition. The Richmond-upon-Thames Planning Committee granted permission (12/2327/FUL) for the rebuilding of four residences (4x3 bedroom town houses) on the site in Dec 2012.

16th Feb

Real Ale Ltd based in Twickenham was named independent beer retailer of the year. The company was rewarded for its commitment to championing beer and making it the core element in the success of the business in the past year. The awards ceremony took place at the Drinks Retailing Awards in the Dorchester hotel on 5th February. Real Ale's MD Nick Dolan said: "We are delighted to win this award, and to be recognised by the industry". See news item in the Richmond & Twickenham Times.

A planning application (13/0070/FUL) has been submitted for changes at the rear of The Mitre at 20 St Marys Grove, Richmond. The proposal is for the demolition of existing stable block, single garage and attached storage shed. Reinstatement of boundary wall. Levelling and landscaping to pub garden.

12th Jan

The Load of Hay at 330 Staines Road. Bedford (East) was reported closed Nov 2012, but now appeared open again. No real ale.

10th Jan

The Rose & Crown in Isleworth (Grade II listed) has been closed and boarded up since 2008. On the 2nd Jan a planning application (Ref: 00707/U/L13) has been submitted to Hounslow Council for the demolition of coach house and existing single storey rear extension to the main building and erection of a single storey rear extension, roof extension, internal alterations and conversion into 3 houses.
