National Beer Scoring Scheme

The National Scoring Scheme (NBSS) is a 0-5 point scale for judging beer quality in Pubs and is used by CAMRA members to select pubs for the CAMRA Good Beer Guide (GBG).

The system is easy to use and gives consistancy to reports on a wide range of beers sampled in pubs across the country.

What do the scores mean?

ScoreMeaning
0 - Undrinkable. No cask ale available or so poor you have to take it back or can't finish it.
1 - Poor.Beer that is anything from barely drinkable with considerable resentment.
2 - Average.Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn't inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing.
3 - Good.Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.
4 - Very Good.Excellent beer in excellent condition.
5 - Perfect.Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.

Branch Pub Scoring Scheme

The CAMRA Richmond & Hounslow Branch are interested to learn your views on the pubs you visit within the branch area. Because there is no national scheme we have tentatively drawn-up a set of criteria you can use on our Pub Records feedback form. If you have any comments about this do let us know.

ScoreMeaning
0 - Unbearable. After entering the Pub you decide it's not a place you could even contemplate staying for a drink and best to leave asap. Either because of the people using the establishment, the furnishings or the atmosphere perceived at the time.
1 - Poor.An unpleasent place that you would not wish to stay any longer than you have to.
2 - Average.A typical basic 'boozer' where no effort has been made to improve the service or décore.
3 - Good.A comfortable place to spend time in. Efficient bar staff that serves you in a friendly manner and a pub you would use again.
4 - Very Good.An exceptional place that you would go out of your way to get to. An establishment that has obviously made every effort to satisfy their customers. A pub, that you are reluctant to leave.
5 - Perfect.Probably the best pub you are ever likely to find. A place that you will remember for years to come.
